NECO study guide: SSCE and BECE preparation that actually sticks

The National Examinations Council runs the BECE at the end of junior secondary and the SSCE for senior secondary candidates. NECO papers reward clean structure and syllabus coverage. This guide shows what is examined, how it is graded, and how to build a revision routine with a verified Sabiecole tutor.

Understand the exam

How NECO really works

BECE: the junior secondary gateway

The Basic Education Certificate Examination closes JSS3 and decides senior secondary placement. It covers Mathematics, English Studies, Basic Science and Technology, National Values, Business Studies, Nigerian language, French, and pre-vocational subjects.

SSCE: internal and external candidates

School candidates sit the internal June to July diet, while private candidates sit the external November to December diet. Both certificates carry the same weight for admission, so a missed credit can be repaired in the same year.

How NECO differs from WAEC

Content overlaps heavily, but NECO essay questions tend to be more direct and objective papers slightly longer. Preparing for both with the same tutor is efficient, and many students register for both to secure their five credits.

  • Register early; late registration for the external diet is costly and stressful.
  • Practise NECO and WAEC papers side by side, the overlap saves weeks of work.
  • Write essay answers in labelled points, examiners scan for keywords.
  • Keep a formula sheet per science subject and rewrite it from memory weekly.
